Diabetes Foot Care
People with diabetes need to take particular care of their feet due to the potential for nerve damage and poor blood circulation.
01. Regular Inspection :
Examine your feet every day. Look for cuts, blisters, red spots, swelling etc even if you dont feel any pain.
Alert your healthcare provider if you notice anything unusual.
02. Keep Your Feet Clean:
Wash your feet daily with warm not hot water and gentle soap.
Dry them gently especially between the toes.
03. Moisturize Your Skin:
Apply a good moisturizer to your feet daily to prevent cracking but avoid applying between the toes excessively since this can lead to a fungal infection.
04. Never Go Barefoot Walking
Barefoot poses a risk of cuts or injury which may lead to infection . Always wear shoes or slippers even indoors.
05. Use Comfortable WellFitted Shoes
Shoes should be comfortable from the first wear. Avoid tight or narrow shoes that can cause pressure sores. Check inside your shoes before wearing them to ensure no grating seams or objects inside that could cause an injury.
06. Regular Exercise:
Regular exercise such as walking boosts blood circulation in your feet but remember to wear supportive shoes and clean dry socks
07. Regular Checkups:
Have your feet examined at every visit to your healthcare provider.
How successful you are in protecting your feet largely depends on controlling your blood sugar levels.
Healthy blood sugar levels can prevent or slow nerve damage in your feet.
